Famed llamas head into retirement

PHOENIX (WISH) – Two llamas that made national headlines during an escape last month are retiring from public life.

Before their escape, the Internet’s favorite “llamas on the lam” appeared at parades and schools, but since their rise to fame, their owners say someone complained to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, saying they didn’t have permits to showcase the animals.

The USDA requires any warm-blooded animals being displayed in public or used in educational presentations to be licensed.

The animals’ owners tell The Guardian newspaper they have tried to contact the agency, but are giving up because they say all correspondence must be done in writing.

So, the llamas will enjoy retirement on a farm in Arizona.
