State board to decide on Gary funeral home worker’s license

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Board of Funeral and Cemetery Service is to decide on the status of the license of a Gary funeral home worker accused of hiding the bodies of two babies.

The state board’s meeting is in Indianapolis on Thursday.

That’s when board members will decide if they will suspend Benjamin L. Rawls’ license for three months while investigations continue into Smith, Bizzell and Warner and Son Funeral Home.

The Indiana attorney general filed a petition to the board accusing the Dolton, Illinois man of hiding the babies’ remains from state inspectors in the business’ ceiling.

The attorney general asked for the 90-day license suspension.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office retrieved the remains from the funeral home in early March.
