Family escapes burning home on Indy’s north side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indianapolis firefighters say six people escaped a fire on the north side of the city early Friday morning.

It happened at a home in the 5700 block of Coburn Avenue around 5:45 a.m. This is near North Michigan Road and West 58th Street.

The family living at the home told IFD that the sound of a loud boom preceded the start of the fire, and then the smoke detectors activated – that’s when they left the house.

Two adults, their three children and an overnight guest all escaped the fire unharmed. The family’s dog has been accounted for, but their pet turtle is still missing.

The home suffered $60,000 in damages. IFD is still investigating the cause of the loud boom and fire.

IFD Victims Assistance and Red Cross are working together to provide shelter to the family.
