IMPD: School bus crashes, lands in ditch

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A school bus was involved in a crash on the southeast side of Indianapolis Tuesday morning.

It happened in the 6600 block of Mimosa Lane, which is just west of Interstate 74, shortly before 7:30 a.m. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said the bus was on its side in a ditch and that smoke was coming from the vehicle.

According to police, the nine Franklin Central High School students on board were quickly evacuated from the bus following the crash.

All but two students were checked out at the scene and were said to be OK. The two students that were transported to the hospital were heading to be checked out as a precautionary measure, as was the driver of the bus.

Officials at the Franklin Township Transportation Department said another bus was sent to the scene to continue on with the route.

Police were blocking Acton and Southeastern to motorists so the crash could be cleared.
