INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard was on hand Tuesday to help honor more than 200 volunteers for serving their community. Across the country about 2,600 mayors did the same thing in their communities for the third annual Mayor’s Day of Recognition for National Service.

Tuesday morning at Ivy Tech Community College 13 different local volunteer groups including Senior Companions and Catholic charities were recognized. Tuesday was about thanking the just fewer than 150 million American volunteers for their past year of service.

“We’re in April right now and every Saturday there are going to be clean-ups in different parts for the city just helping each other out and cleaning up neighborhoods,” Ballard said. “It happens all the time. I tell people I get to see things that other people don’t get to see and I see it almost daily because people really do help each other. It won’t be in the newspaper, it won’t be on TV but it happens all the time .”
