‘Workout Wednesday’ returns April 15

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – As the temperatures rise this spring, so will the heart-rates when Workout Wednesday returns for a second year on Georgia Street.

Starting Wednesday, April 15, the free, 45-minute workout will be held on Georgia Street’s west block Boardwalk – between Illinois and Capitol streets – from noon to 12:45 p.m. Towels will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring water.

“New for this year, we have a celebrity guest appearance each week, so that will be something fun to look forward to,” says André Davis, YMCA Instructor of Workout Wednesday for 2014 and 2015.

Davis says each week’s celebrity guest will co-lead the warm-up at the beginning of the workout.

Also new for 2015, the weekly group workout will rotate month-to-month from Zumba to hip-hop-cardio. Zumba will be taught during the months of April, June and August. Hip-hop cardio will be taught during the months of May and July.

“We’re going to be incorporating hip-hop cardio, so that’s a different look, different feel but we’re excited to introduce all new songs, all new moves and just have a really good time,” says Davis.

For Downtown Indy, the organization that manages events on Georgia Street, bringing back the weekly workout for 2015 was a no-brainer.

“We were blown away by the numbers last year – way more than we expected. We get anywhere upwards of 50 to 75 people,” says Amanda Dorman, Communications Manager for Downtown Indy. “Obviously it has great health benefits for downtown, it encourages exercise and healthy living and that healthy lifestyle for completely free – no cost to anyone.”

Davis explains that bringing weekly events to Georgia Street is essential to creating a vibrant downtown.

“We know that to ensure a positive experience for residents, for people visiting downtown and people who live nearby downtown, that we need to make sure that downtown is active and vibrant with events,” says Davis. “We need to activate some of our greatest event spaces and one of those is Georgia Street, and what better way to do that than with Workout Wednesday.”
