Police investigating car break-ins at Fishers YMCA

FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) — Police are urging people to be extra cautious about what they leave in their cars after police say several suspects were breaking into cars outside a YMCA in Fishers.

According to police, thieves got away but police found their abandoned car less than ten minutes from the crime scene. While dozens of people were inside working out police say thieves knew exactly what they were looking for.

“It’s disappointing, it’s discouraging it’s sad that people, you know, will take from others,” said gym member Matt Allen.

It all happened in the parking lot when police say an officer was at the right place at the right time.

“Actually the officers were just on patrol and saw these two subjects around a vehicle. They saw the officer and jumped into the vehicle and took off at a high rate of speed and left,” said Fishers Police Department Chief George Kehl.

Fishers police called for backup with several agencies, including Carmel and Hamilton County. Police setting up a perimeter to find the suspects, but they had no luck.

“It went up northbound Atlanta Road to 116th Street. Then went westbound on 116th Street and that’s when they terminated the pursuit because the amount of traffic,” said Kehl.

Police say several cars had smashed out windows. Personal belongings like laptops, purses and wallets were taken.

The YMCA is reminding members to be aware of your surroundings and to keep valuables out of plain sight. The associate executive director says if you have too, you can always bring it inside.

Police say they were able to recover the stolen items. That’s because the thieves were throwing them out of the window during the pursuit.
