Vet: Phones ringing non-stop over canine influenza

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Staff at Noah’s Animal Hospital say their phones have been ringing non-stop with clients on the other end expressing concern over canine influenza after the outbreak in Illinois.

No cases have been reported in Indianapolis according to the Indiana Board of Animal Health. They did say more than 1,000 cases were reported in the Chicago land area and 2,000 tests have been conducted.

“This means ten to twenty cases per clinic per week were reported in Chicago,” said certified veterinary journalist Thomas Dock.

For residents in Indianapolis there is no rush to get in for the vaccine.

“Several clinics in Indianapolis will have the canine influenza shot in stock for pet owners who travel. I am not seeing a reason for anyone to rush in and get it just yet,” said Noah’s Animal Hospital Veterinarian Emma Ryan

If dog owners want to vaccinate their pet, the canine influenza shot cost around $45 and requires a booster three weeks later if it’s the first time the shot has \ been administered.

The disease mimics Bordetellosis better known as kennel cough. It spread between dogs by them coming in direct contact with each other. After infection, there is a two through five day incubation period. Mild cases may require only isolation, supportive care, good nutrition, rest and clean water. In more extreme cases, you may see watery eyes, hear hacking or lough coughing noises. There will also be a lack of appetite , loose stools and the dog may have a high temperature.

“When in doubt, you should go see your veterinarian to check especially if any abnormal symptoms get worse, said Noah’s Animal Hospital.
