Pacers’ Copeland thanks fans, apologizes

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland thanked people for their support and apologized Thursday, following his hospitalization after a stabbing at a New York City night club.

Copeland suffered stab wounds to the elbow and abdomen in a scuffle that also left his girlfriend and another woman with injuries early Wednesday morning. Pacers officials said Thursday that Copeland had surgery Wednesday and remains in stable condition at a hospital in New York City. It wasn’t clear how long he would remain hospitalized.

Copeland released this statement through the team:

“I want to thank all the fans, friends, teammates, coaches and the Pacers organization for their support and prayers during this time. I also want to apologize to everyone, particularly the NBA and the Pacers for my bad choice at being out at that time. I am doing as well as can be expected and I will work hard to make a full recovery.”
