Fallen IMPD officer to be honored

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officer killed in the line of duty will be honored Friday.

Members of Congress will pay tribute to Officer Rod Bradway, who was killed in 2013. U.S. senators from Indiana along with Congressman Andre Carson and officials from the U.S. Justice Department will be at the Indiana War Memorial for the ceremony. They will present Officer Bradway’s widow with the Congressional Badge of Bravery.

Bradway died in Sept. 2013. He responded to an early morning fight between a man and woman at an Indianapolis apartment complex. When Bradway arrived, police say the man was waiting behind a door and then opened fire.

The badge that Bradway’s family will receive Friday was created by Congress in 2008. It’s to honor law enforcement officers around the country who show exceptional bravery. It also comes as IMPD Chief Rick Hite says our community and the rest of the country are dealing with more and more violent encounters between the public and police.

According to a police officer memorial organization, 47 officers were shot nationwide in 2014. Thirty-one were killed in 2013 – among them, Officer Bradway.

Friday’s service begins at the Indiana War Memorial at 2:30 p.m.
