Kokomo team says baseball stadium on track for May 30 opener

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) – A Kokomo minor league baseball team says it’s still on track to open its home schedule May 30 amid a legal dispute over stadium construction.

The Kokomo Tribune reports work on the downtown stadium for the Kokomo Jackrabbits has continued as the city negotiates with Indiana and federal governments.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency said last month it was suspending hazard mitigation grants for Indiana because parts of the Kokomo baseball stadium were being built in an area prone to floods that’s meant to remain green space. The agency said FEMA grants were used to buy certain parcels of land within the stadium project.

The state previously said it planned to take legal action against Kokomo.

Seats will be added soon at the stadium, which will have an artificial turf field.

The team is hosting a job fair at Kokomo City Hall on April 21 as it looks to hire 30 to 40 people for the summer. Open positions include concession staffers, bartenders, public address announcer, disc jockey and mascot.
