WW II grenades removed from mobile home

GARY, Ind. (AP) – Police said three live World War II Japanese grenades have been removed from a vacant mobile home in Gary.

Cmdr. Del Stout told The Times of Northwest Indiana that the manager of the mobile home park found the grenades on Thursday.

The grenades were in a vacant mobile home, since a fire damaged the home in November.

An explosives disposal team form Grissom Air Reserve Base in Peru removed the grenades and detonated them at another location.

Stout said the grenades were capable of producing a blast that could have affected a wide area in the mobile home park.

He said the grenades apparently belonged to a relative of the mobile home’s last tenant.

Police are still investigating.
