Police: Stolen car clocked going 111 mph while racing on highway

PERU, Ind. (WANE) Police are looking for the racer of a silver Mustang after arresting his competition when both cars were clocked driving 111 miles per hour. Police said the racer who was arrested had been driving a stolen Chevy Impala while under the influence of a narcotic.

According to 24-Hour News 8 partner station, WANE, Stephen Ledgerwood, 25, of North Webster, who was racing the Impala, pulled over his vehicle around 11:30 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 24 near Paw Pike.

Meanwhile, officers with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department followed the Mustang. However, the pursuit ended shortly because of the Mustang’s reckless driving and the fact that the initial stopping charge was a traffic infraction.

Indiana State Trooper Steven Glass stopped the Impala. Glass reported that Ledgerwood was driving under the influence of a narcotic and the license plate on the Impala was reported stolen out of Elkhart. Ledgerwood could not provide info on how he obtained the Impala.

He was taken to the Miami County Jail where he faces criminal charges for operating a vehicle while under the influence of a narcotic, racing and auto theft.

If anyone has information on the driver of the silver Mustang, they are encouraged to contact the Miami County Sheriff’s Department at 765-472-1322.
