Leaky roof, mold among repair needs at Floyd County jail

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) – A southern Indiana sheriff says his county jail needs a new roof, mold remediation and other repairs. But financial challenges could make the work a daunting task.

Floyd County Sheriff Frank Loop says the jail is 23 years old but has the wear and tear of a 69-year-old building. He says the roof leaks, windows and doors need to be replaced, the kitchen has mold problems and poor air flow leaves some housing areas too hot and others too cold.

The News and Tribune reports the only upgrade to the jail since it opened in 1992 was to bunk the beds to increase the facility’s capacity from 134 inmates to 234 in 1996.

Floyd County faces a $1.2 million deficit in its general fund.
