Church recommits to Indy convention after RFRA flap

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A denomination that pulled a convention from Indianapolis amid the furor over a new Indiana religious objections law that raised the specter of discrimination against gays and others is bring the meeting back to the city after the law was amended.

The General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) announced Monday that the amendments signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence on April 2 addressed its concerns and it has selected Indianapolis for its 2017 General Assembly.

The Indianapolis-based denomination’s general minister and president, Sharon Watkins, says its decision to move the meeting “helped get Indiana on the road to full protection for all people.”

The meeting was among several that were canceled or placed in jeopardy by the passage of the original law.
