BMV reminds owners of scooters, mopeds to register vehicles

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Bureau of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Kent Abernathy is reminding Indiana residents that state law requires owners of low-speed mopeds and scooters to register their vehicles.

The new law that went into effect Jan. 1 requires owners of mopeds or scooters with engines smaller than 50 cubic centimeters to have a registration, a license plate and an Indiana identification card. They also must pass a test identifying street signs.

Abernathy said that as of mid-April, the BMV has registered nearly 9,000 motor driven cycles.

He said he expects more people to be out on the road as the weather turns warmer.
