Officials: Smell in Hamilton County is not gas leak

HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – Police and fire officials were flooded with calls Tuesday morning about a stink in Hamilton County.

The Carmel Fire Department said shortly after 11 a.m. they had responded to dozens of 911 calls from residents reporting the smell of gas.

Officials said there was a release of the odorant used in natural gas at State Road 32 and Little Chicago Road. Westfield fire crews said Vectren was made aware of the issue and was neutralizing the odorant. They added it could take a while for the odor to dissipate.

Vectren confirmed there was no actual natural gas leak, only the odorant. Winds were reportedly carrying the smell up to Zionsville.
