People ‘ask for more’ on Equal Pay Day

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – People around the world are celebrating National Equal Pay Day Tuesday, a day created in efforts to close the gap in wages based on gender.

Last week, President Obama declared April 8 National Equal Pay Day. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, women are making only 78 percent of what men earn.

Some celebrities are voicing their opinions on the matter. In a YouTube video, Sarah Silverman Doesn’t Think the Wage Gap is Funny Either, comedian Sarah Silverman said, “I’m all for women having to work harder to prove themselves at this juncture, that’s the way it is in the world. But if you work a job and a man is working the same job, you should be getting paid the same.”

The hashtags #ASK4MORE and #EQUALPAYNOW are trending on social media to commemorate Equal Pay Day.

The U.S. Department of Labor published a YouTube video showing Bat Girl fighting for equal pay about 40 years ago.
