Fire damages home on city’s near north side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indianapolis Fire Department crews were called to a fire on the city’s near north side.

IFD said when they arrived to the home in the 2100 block of North New Jersey Street around 1:15 p.m. smoke was showing from the structure.

One of the occupants of the home said she arrived home and smelled smoke from the exterior. She opened a side door to let the animals out, but didn’t enter the home, IFD said. She then called 911.

Four dogs made it out of the home OK. One was given oxygen on the scene. Five other animals were unaccounted, including four cats, one dog and one rabbit.

IFD had the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

Damage was estimated at $25,000.
