Gunfire during scuffle leaves 1 person dead in Madison

MADISON, Ind. (AP) – Police are questioning three males in connection with the slaying of a 17-year-old youth in downtown Madison.

Indiana State Police say several people were fighting when a gun went off and struck the male youth shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in the historic Ohio River city. The youth later died at a hospital.

They say an SUV with Kentucky license plates fled the scene and was headed for the Madison-Milton Bridge linking Indiana and Kentucky when it was stopped by officers. Three males who were in the vehicle have been questioned by investigators.

Madison Police Chief Dan Thurston issued a news release saying state police will investigate the case because the victim’s family has a relationship with the Madison Police Department. The victim’s name hasn’t been released.
