INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Fire departments from across the country will come together in Indianapolis this week for a conference.

On Sunday, fire department teachers began setting up for this year’s Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC). In Thorntown, instructors set up a donated house to study the science behind the fire, by actually lighting it on fire.

“We’ve instrumented the building so we can show firefighters, teach firefighters, how rapidly fires with modern furnishings spread and grow, especially with these synthetic fuels, how rapidly it becomes un-survivable for a trapped victim,” Daniel Madrzykowsk Fire Protection Engineer

The FDIC starts Monday at the Indiana Convention Center. Firefighters from 53 countries will be in town through next Saturday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
