Flooding forces closure of Monroe Co. court system

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) – A maintenance issue at Zietlow Justice Center has caused extensive flooding and forced the Monroe County court system to remain closed for the rest of the week.

The Herald Times reports walls and carpeting were damaged Sunday after a blockage in a drain pipe from the jail’s kitchen caused flooding in portions of the building below.

The Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office also faces a temporary closure, but officials are seeking an interim space so the office can continue operating. Monroe Circuit Court Judge Valeri Haughton says another employee is on call to handle any court-related emergencies that may arise.

Commissioners’ administrator Angie Purdie says dozens of court employees won’t be penalized for missing work since the flooding was beyond their control.
