Gov. Pence signs bill creating unified fire training system

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A new law will give Indiana firefighters access to high-quality training and a standardized curriculum that public safety officials say is long overdue.

Republican Gov. Mike Pence signed a measure Thursday that will establish a unified fire academy and training program in Indiana. The proposal was part of Pence’s legislative agenda.

Indiana’s current program is regional and training decisions are made on a local level and then approved by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

Fire officials say collaboration is difficult when training varies, and this can create dangerous situations for firefighters.

The state fire marshal will now create a set standard for firefighter training and curriculum.

Pence says the proposal will not only protect firefighters on the job, but also provide better service and safety for Hoosiers.
