Republicans eye more rules on Ritz, education board dealings

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Legislative leaders are looking at broadening the Republican backed proposal that would replace Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz as leader of Indiana’s State Board of Education.

Top House and Senate Republicans said Thursday that provisions could be added to the bill specifying information that Ritz’s Department of Education must provide to the state board.

Both the House and Senate have approved versions of the bill, but lawmakers face an April 29 deadline to reach a final agreement.

Republican leaders said they want to address dysfunction between Ritz and other board members, who are appointees of Republican Gov. Mike Pence

Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane said such proposed changes late in the legislative session create a potential for greater divides.
