Suspect wanted in deadly stairwell shooting turns himself in

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Investigators with Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department say a man wanted for the death of a 66-year-old found shot in an apartment stairwell has turned himself in.

IMPD said 20-year-old Jameel Muhammad turned himself in on Wednesday.

Patrick Wilson was killed around 4:15 p.m. on April 10 in the 3800 block of Bennett Drive. Family members tell 24-Hour News 8 that Wilson had just returned from picking up some groceries for dinner that night.

Police said witnesses heard gunshots coming from the hallway. They said Wilson was found laying in the stairwell with gunshot wounds to his torso. He died at the scene.

IMPD issued an arrest warrant for Muhammad on Tuesday. Police believe he shot and killed Wilson.

Following an interview with detectives Muhammad was arrested.

Muhammad was scheduled for his first hearing Thursday morning. His charges include, two murder charges, carrying a handgun with a prior felony and robbery resulting bodily injury.
