South Bend panel tables cellphone ban proposal

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A South Bend city panel has tabled a proposal banning the use of cellphones and other handheld electronic devices while driving.

Members of the Health and Public Safety Committee postponed discussing the proposal further Monday amid questions about cost, implementation and enforcement. The committee will discuss the matter again at a special meeting on May 18.

It will now be at least a month before the proposal is considered by the city council.

Hands-free devices would be allowed under the proposal for the city of South Bend. The ban wouldn’t apply to first responders or dispatching devices.
