ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — A northern Indiana sheriff’s department says five inmates were taken to a hospital suffering from seizures, apparently after smoking something.
Elkhart County Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Bradberry said officers at the jail were alerted on Wednesday that inmates in a minimum-security unit needed medical help.
He said when officers arrived four inmates were having seizures. Another inmate began seizing while officers were present.
Officers reported a burnt smell and Bradberry said other inmates reported the five had been smoking something.
Bradberry said they were taken to the Elkhart General Hospital as a precaution.
He said their medical conditions were not immediately available.
