500 Festival kicks off May events in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The 500 Festival celebrations started in downtown Indianapolis on Wednesday.

The 500 Festival is celebrated during the month of May with many events including the Mini-Marathon and the Indianapolis 500. The festival was open to the public.

Pace cars drove around Monument Circle to open the event and Mayor Greg Ballard spoke during the brief ceremony.

Colts star Pat McAfee officially kicked things off by kicking a football down Meridian Street.

“The Indianapolis 500 is such an awesome spectacle every single year and all the other things we have going on. The Indy 500 Festival did such an amazing job, so when I was asked to be a part of it a couple times, I couldn’t have said yes quicker. It’s going to be such a fun month,” said McAfee.

He stayed after the ceremony to sign autographs as Hoosiers enjoyed food from the city’s favorite food trucks and had their picture taken with the festival cars.
