Early mosquito sightings reported in Indiana

HENDRICKS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – The Hendricks County Health Department says after several reports of early mosquito sightings, it’s time for preventative methods to control diseases that they can spread.

At the peak of 2014 mosquito season there were numerous reports of Chikungunya. There were several people diagnosed with the disease in Indiana. Doctors say it can cause high fevers, nausea and even long-term health problems like joint and muscle pain.

According to the CDC, this was the first year this disease was spread in the U.S. to non-travelers. The CDC says this is because the world has become a more global commerce which makes it even that much more critical for everyone to prepare for mosquito season as early as possible.

There’s also the threat of West Nile Virus. The CDC says West Nile can be incredibly miserable and at times even fatal.

Hendricks County health officials also sent out a prep list:

  • Repair failed septic systems.
  • Dispose of old tires, cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or other unused containers that can hold water.
  • Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left out of doors.
  • Clean clogged roof gutters.
  • Maintain swimming pools, or drain the pool and keep the pool cover free of standing water.
  • Aerate ornamental pools, or stock them with fish.
  • Keep birdbaths clean.

Health officials also remind you protect your body. They say to have bug spray ready and wear protective clothing especially in peak hours between dusk and dawn.
