Messel appointed new public defender

BROWN COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) – The man accused of murdering an Indiana University student has new representation.

According to court documents, 49-year-old Daniel Messel was appointed a new public defender.

Messel is accused in the murder of IU student Hannah Wilson.

Documents indicate previous defender Andrew Szakaly has been withdrawn and Messel will now be represented by Bargersville attorney Dorie Maryan.

24-Hour News 8 reached out to Brown County Circuit Court, the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office and Maryan’s office for an explanation for the change, but has not yet heard back.
