Children are helping end hunger in Fishers

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Brooks School Elementary partnered with the United Methodist Church in Fishers to help fill the church food pantry.

The third graders want to help end hunger in the community. Thirty percent of the children in the area are considered food insecure.

They made flyers and posted them around the community asking people to donate canned goods.

The food drive and silent auction was held on Friday. Everything donated went toward buying meat and basic items that food stamps don’t cover such as soap, diapers and toilet paper.

Volunteers at United Methodist Church said 250 people a week stop by every Wednesday when they open their doors to the public. It takes all week to restock the shelves.

The demand is high in the area. The pantry opened in 2007 and over the years they have passed out one and a half million pounds of food.

“People don’t realize that other people are hungry in Fishers. No child should ever have to go hungry,” said Kelly Stewart, the event organizer.

Everyone in need of food is welcome to shop for free at the pantry. The only requirement is to show proof of residency in Hamilton County.
