Indiana doctor creates fund for Nepal earthquake victims

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI/AP) – A Terre Haute doctor set up a fund that he’ll use on his medical mission to his homeland of Nepal.

Dr. Prakash Karki is a Terre Haute physician who wants to help the people of his homeland devastated by last weekend’s earthquake.

Dr. Karki is making the trip at his own expense. However, Dr. Karki set up what’s called the “Hoosiers Helping Nepal” fund through Terre Haute Savings Bank.

Proceeds from this fund will be used to purchase tents, baby items and clean drinking water among other things.

Nepal’s capital and other densely populated areas were devastated by a strong earthquake Saturday that caused causing walls to topple and buildings to collapse. More than 6,100 people died and more than 13,800 have been injured.

He plans to leave for Nepal on May 5th.
