Evansville launches rental registry to track landlords

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – Evansville landlords could face fines if they fail to register their rental properties with the city under a new mandatory registry program.

Building commissioner Ron Beane tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the city wants to create its first comprehensive list of rental properties. He says the registry will ensure that police and code enforcement officials have accurate contact information for all addresses.

The registry requires owners to provide telephone numbers and mailing and email addresses. Properties owned by corporations must include contact information for the chief executive officer or another responsible official.

Landlords must pay $5 per unit to register, up to a maximum of $100.

Violators can face fines of up to $100 for each infraction.
