Indy hosts international cricket tournament

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The city of Indianapolis built its so-called World Sports Park and on Sunday it played host to a cricket tournament.

A small crowd turned out for Sunday’s opening of the International Cricket Council Americas Tournament.

Teams from the U.S., Canada, Bermuda and Suriname are playing to advance to a tournament in Scotland and Ireland this summer.

“It’s not a widely played game in Indiana, that’s for sure, but certainly in other pockets of the states, there’s a lot of cricket going on in New York and Florida, and those sort of areas. We’d like to think that bringing it to a new frontier will certainly give it some exposure,” said Ben Kavenagh ICC Americas.

The tournament continues through May 9.

World Sports Park is located in Post Road Community Park on the southeast side. Besides Cricket, it’s meant to play host to other sports like Rugby and Gaelic Football.
