Young athletes team up for cancer research

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Dozens of young athletes got the chance to Play Like a Warrior on Sunday.

The inaugural event that was held at the Incrediplex allowed young boys and girls to work on their football, cheerleading and dancing skills.

The parents of Wayland Villars,4, organized the event to raise money for DIPG research. Wayland died from the rare form of brain cancer in August 2013. It’s the same type of cancer that killed Indiana native turned college basketball player Lauren Hill.

Wayland’s father, Ben Villars, said, “It feels pretty incredible. It’s kind of overwhelming, but we want to make a difference so it feels natural and right for us to to reach out. We’ve had a lot of help along the way.”

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck helped out with the event. He worked with the young football players to better their playing skills and also took time to answer the young boys’ questions.

The Villars hope to make Play Like a Warrior an annual event.
