Seminar helps seniors ‘outsmart the scam’

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An event Monday looked to protect seniors in our area from scams.

Monday’s “Outsmart the Scam” seminar was a partnership between AARP Indiana, the Attorney General’s office, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office and the Office of Senator Joe Donnelly.

The AARP said being familiar with the scams that are out there can help protect seniors.

Some popular scams are to call and tell you a grandchild is in a Mexican prison and needs money wired to them right away, or online scams where they try to get personal information through an email.

This time of year, door-to-door scams are big. Scammers will often come by and offer to do work around your house.

“People wanting to come and trim branches or wanting to clean out your gutters, or do your asphalt on your driveway, so be very cautious if people come knocking at your door,” said June Lyle, director for AARP of Indiana

Lyle also said a big red flag should go up if anyone who contacts you to do work for you, whether it’s by phone, email or even at your front door.

Lyle said don’t ever give out personal information and if something doesn’t seem quite right, check in with a family member or call the attorney general’s office.
