Group urges families to ‘unplug’ for a week

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Could you imagine children turning off their televisions, phones, tablets, phones, computers and video games for a week?

This week is Screen-Free Week, created by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood. The group is encouraging families to try screen-free activities, including exercising.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting screen time among children over 2 to no more than one or two hours per day. However, experts say the average child or teen spends seven hours per day looking at a screen, whether it’s a TV, computer, phone or other electronic device.

Screen free week is May 4-May 10. The group is encouraging people to plan organized events and register them on the official website. As of Tuesday afternoon, there were no events planned in Central Indiana.

CNN put together some suggestions for screen-free week, including eating dinner together, doing art projects and playing board games.
