Education board set to meet before possible member changes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – The Indiana Board of Education is set to meet for the last time before a significant change in membership.

The meeting Thursday falls on the same day Republican Gov. Mike Pence plans to make a decision on a bill that takes away two of his appointments to the board.

If Pence approves the legislation, he would be able to appoint eight people to the board, with the leaders of the Indiana House and Senate making one appointment each.

The change was spurred by disputes between Pence appointees and Democratic state schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz.

The appointment changes would take effect June 1. Ritz will remain chairwoman of the board until 2017, when the board can elect any member as it leader.
