Race fans urged to brace for new Speedway roundabout

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Race fans heading to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this month are being urged to brace themselves for traffic flow changes outside the track.

A two-lane roundabout now stands at the intersection of 16th Street and Crawfordsville Road but it doesn’t connect with Georgetown Road.

That means race fans attending practices or Saturday’s Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis or the Indianapolis 500 on May 24 can no longer access Georgetown Road from 16th Street or Crawfordsville Road or vice versa.

Officials with the town of Speedway say the roundabout will result in fewer vehicle stops and accidents, fewer delays during peak travel times, and reduced air and noise pollution.

Traffic “roundabouts” gently ease drivers into turn circles with no traffic lights.
