Softball coach fired after minors arrested at his home

TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) – The Benton Central softball coach has been fired after seven students were arrested for alleged underage drinking at his home.

The incident happened Saturday when Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at Jeff Best’s home.

Lt. Greg Frantz said when deputies arrived, seven Benton Central students were arrested for alleged underage drinking. Best was not arrested. All of the students were released to their parents later that night.

Benton Community School Corporation Supt. Gregg Hoover released this statement Friday regarding Best:

The Benton Community School Corporation received information concerning an incident that occurred over the past weekend. Upon receiving this information the administration began an investigation. Any individual that is identified through this investigation as being involved will be processed according to our policies, rules and regulations in our student handbook.

The findings of this investigation has resulted in the administration making a change in leadership in the Benton Centrals girls’ Softball program. In regards to our softball program leadership, this is a personnel matter so details will not be discussed, but Mr. Jeff Best is no longer an employee of Benton Community School Corporation.
