ISP trooper helps save fawn along I-70 in Putnam County

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana State Police received several calls on Saturday morning about a “baby deer” in the median of Interstate 70.

ISP Trooper Mike Wood was dispatched to mile marker 48.5 where he discovered a fawn and what he believed to be its deceased mother on the shoulder. The deer appeared to be only a few hours old and had what appeared to be pat of the birthing process still attached.

Trooper Wood picked up the deer and placed it in a towel and took it to Curtis Wrecker Service in Little Point. Employees were able to give Wood additional garments to keep the deer warm.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources was contacted to assist with placement for the deer. An animal rehabilitation center in Montgomery County was located and willing to take the deer.

“The numerous calls undoubtedly set forth numerous activities which led to the safety of this deer. It was also heartwarming for all of us to play such a vital role in the health and well being of this animal” commented Trooper Mike Wood.
