INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two firefighters were hurt battling a fire on the near east side of Indianapolis late Sunday night.

The Indianapolis Fire Department responded to the 200 block of Parkview Avenue around 11:15 p.m. after a garage was reported to be on fire. When firefighters got to the scene, they found it was a vacant duplex burning.

Firefighters were ordered out of the building because strong winds continued to push flames ahead of the crews trying to fight it.

Officials say at some point during the incident, two firefighters were hurt after falling through the roof. According to IFD, the firefighters were on the rear roof of the house when one fell through the roof and got caught on the beams, injuring his shoulder. The second firefighter reached out to grab him as he fell. He hurt his back. Both were later transported to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital to be checked out.

It took firefighters an hour to bring the fire under control. Damages to the home have been estimated at $85,000. There were no working smoke detectors in the home.
