Hearing set for man accused in 1988 Mishawaka cold case

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The trial of a northern Indiana man accused in the 1988 killing of a 16-year-old girl has been pushed back more than three months.

WSBT-TV reports the trial of Phillip Geans of Mishawaka had been scheduled to begin next month, but a judge Monday delayed it to Sept. 21.

Geans was charged in December 2013 in the shooting death of Mishawaka High School sophomore Theresa Burns. His arrest came nearly 26 years after the teen’s death. Geans was 18 when Burns was shot in her home after leaving school. Police say Geans and Burns knew each other through friends.
