GREENWOOD, Ind. (WISH) — A neighbor discovered a 3-year-old boy crying inside his home Monday afternoon.

Greenwood Police later identified the boy as 3-year old Michael Stepien. According to the boy’s mother, the boy who stands 3 feet tall and about 40 pounds disappeared around 9 a.m. Monday.

Michael’s mother told police she fell asleep, awoke and the 3-year-old was gone.

Police started searching for the boy. Divers searched a nearby pond. Officers, residents, and K-9s searched on land.

Around 3 p.m., a boy coming home from school walked inside his home and saw Michael sitting near the stair case crying. The older boy called for help and searchers ran to the home and took Michael to police.

Medical crews checked Michael over and determined he did not suffer any injures.

Officers say Michael got inside his neighbor’s home through an unlocked door.

“Make sure to keep an eye on your child, you don’t think it can happen to you but it can,” said Michael’s mom Jessica Stepien.

It’s estimated that hundreds of people helped in the search for Michael.

Before the Stepiens whisked their son away they thanked the searchers for their help.

“Thank you to everyone that came out to help, we are just happy he is home safe,” said Micahel’s father, Bryan Stepien.
