City vehicles destroyed by fire in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – Three city vehicles were destroyed Monday night in a chain reaction fire that left about $850,000 worth of damages at the Columbus city garage.

The Columbus Fire Department said a city employee found a trash packer truck on fire just after 5 p.m. Monday. When firefighters got to the garage, two vehicles were on fire. Shortly after, the fuel tank on the first vehicle exploded into flames, catching a third vehicle on fire.

After about 20 minutes, the fire was under control but the three vehicles were destroyed.

No one was injured, and it wasn’t clear what started the fire. The fire caused enough damage to make it difficult to find where the issue began.

The director of the city garage didn’t expect any interruption of city services as a result of the fire.
