Doctor thanks the strangers who saved his life

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – A doctor had the chance Tuesday to personally thank the people responsible for saving his life four months ago.

On January 12, Dr. Martin Goldstein was found unconscious on a sidewalk near the IU Simon Cancer Center by Maria Whicker, who was on her way to her first day of nursing school.

Whicker and others passing by used chest compressions and an automated external defibrillator provided by the IU Simon Cancer Center to revive Dr. Goldstein before paramedics arrived.

Tuesday, Dr. Goldstein met those who saved him for the first time. He wanted to express his gratitude and get to know them on a personal level.

“What they did for me, it sounds like a cliché, but literally they saved my life,” Dr. Goldstein said.

Whicker said she was thrilled that her education helped save a life.

“It’s just the little things; it’s all the timing,” Whicker said. “We were talking about how all of our paths met that night and it’s about being in the right place at the right time and not being afraid to take action and do something that could potentially save someone’s life.”

Dr. Goldstein said he is feeling great. He received a chest implant to prevent future complications.
