Crews set to ramp up South Split project

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Motorists can expect to see a major construction project come to a head on May 27. Crews will begin work to refurbish two 40-year-old bridges that begin at the Interstate 65 and 70 split.

Beginning on May 27 the northbound I-65 ramp to westbound I-70 will be closed for around two months. It is expected re-open before the end of July.

Drivers should pay attention to detour signs. Northbound I-65 to westbound I-70 will be redirected west on I-465 during the time of the project. Drivers who normally use the ramp to get downtown will have to use other local ramps nearby.

“We anticipate a lot of traffic probably exiting a little earlier, possibly on Raymond Street or the Morris/Prospect exits,” said INDOT spokesperson Nathan Riggs.

Riggs said engineers will adjust the timing of the traffic signals at those exits to accommodate the heavier traffic.

He suggested south side commuters try alternate routes now before the closure takes place.

“Plan a little big of extra time based on how long it takes you and then from there, plan probably a little more time, just because other people will be impacted and using those routes as well,” said Riggs.

INDOT said the complete closure of the ramp will speed up construction and provide a safer environment for workers and motorists.

INDOT said some overnight and weekend restrictions could be in place during the construction. Also nearby ramps and other streets will most likely see detours. Morris and Prospect streets will be closed to traffic passing under I-65.
