Volunteers install smoke detectors in second blitz
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – There were more than 40 volunteers who wore Red Cross gear and offered a helping hand to homeowners living on the north side of Indianapolis.
The effort was organized by the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) and Citizens Energy Group.It was the second of six smoke detector blitzes that were scheduled this year.
The Smoke Detector Blitz Program was established 15 years ago to bring awareness and fire safety solutions, and they have distributed 60,000 free smoke detectors to residents.
While hundreds of homeowners received a free smoke detector check and fresh batteries on Thursday, 200 residents received a new unit that was donated and installed free of charge.
Gladis King, 78, said her prayers were answered when the volunteers knocked on her door. She said that loosing precious memories to a fire is one of her biggest fears.
King was told the two smoke detectors that were currently in her home, were not working. She was happy to receive new replacements.
“My stuff is old and antique but it’s mine and I don’t want to lose it to a fire. When you get up there in age, it is hard to go out and get what you need. I am thankful they came by my home and helped me this morning. I know other homeowners appreciated the gesture too,” said King.
“It is fulfilling and rewarding to know this little act gave her so much relief and helped her so much,” said volunteer Emily Carlisle.
