Bike to Work Day activities planned in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – May 15 is National Bike to Work Day and hundreds are expected to gather at the Indy Bike Hub YMCA for breakfast and the blessing of the bikes Friday morning.

There are at least 18 bike trains coordinated throughout central Indiana to downtown for the event.

Organizers hope Bike to Work Day will motivate more people to choose bicycles as an option every day.

A new study in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research shows biking for 30 minutes before work can improve memory, reasoning, and planning on the job. It also improves riders moods and reduces stress, according to researchers.

But Indiana has some work to do to really become a bike-friendly state. According to rankings released this week leading up to Bike to Work Day, Indiana ranks 37th in the nation. The rankings are based on surveys completed by state transportation departments and bicycling advocates that assess progress in legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement, and evaluation and planning.
