US Steel lays off another 285 workers

GARY, Ind. (AP) – U.S. Steel has laid off another 285 workers at its Gary Works mill in the latest wave of layoffs spurred by weak demand for its steel.

Company spokeswoman Courtney Boone cited “challenging market conditions that are impacting the company” for the latest layoffs at the northwestern Indiana plant.

The (Munster) Times reported that the Pittsburgh-based steelmaker laid off 270 hourly union-represented workers three weeks ago, but recalled 52 of them the following week.

The company laid off another 67 salaried managers at Gary Works on Friday, bringing the total number of recent layoffs to 285.

U.S. Steel said the layoffs are temporary.

The steelmaker’s lucrative tubular business plunged along with the price of oil, effectively killing demand for new drilling equipment.

Cheap imported steel has worsened its woes.
